Suzuki Method

I teach using the Suzuki method developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki. This method utilizes children's natural ability and desire to learn a language and applies the same techniques to learning a musical instrument. Suzuki students spend a lot of time listening to recordings of their music. In the beginning stages, they learn exclusively through listening and imitation (rote teaching). When the child has mastered the basic physical coordination, and has begun to understand musical phrasing and expression, note reading is taught. A common misconception is that Suzuki students don't learn to read music. Although the timing of note reading varies from child to child, each student is expected to learn to read music.

Another important part of Suzuki training is the involvement of parents in the lessons and home practice. Parents attend all lessons and take notes about important concepts and practice issues that the teacher addresses in the lesson. At home, the parent is responsible for setting up a practice schedule and ensuring that their child understands and applies what was covered in the lesson.
